The University of La Verne men’s water polo team finished fifth in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference this weekend.

The men’s season finished with a 15-13 overall record and a 4-3 SCIAC record.

“We’ve had good games this season and we know what we need to work on for next season and learn from what we did this season,” junior Will Broer said.

La Verne was up for fifth place against Cal Lutheran on Sunday. They have dominated Cal Lu twice earlier in the season, 8-4, and 6-5.

The Leopards started strong and had excellent defense throughout the entire game. Within the first two minutes of the game, sophomore Darren Richards shot his first and only goal of the game.

Entering the second quarter, the men started strong and Broer scored one of his three goals. Broer rebounded a shot and passed it to senior Owen Barrett who scored one of his three goals.

In the fourth and last quarter, the Leopards decided they were going to finish this game and the season off with a bang. Goal after goal brought ULV to an 11-8 win.

Junior Jared Carvitto threw his first goal right into the net, Barrett tossed it right over the goalie’s head and in it went, Broer being chocked but still threw it in, freshman Andrew McPartland shot and goal, and with an assist from Carvitto made a nice and final goal.

The Leopards were on a roll and put the Kingsmen to bed.

“I’m disappointed with fifth place, but happy that we ended the year with a win,” senior Will Hernandez said.

The Leopards were tied in SCIAC for third place with Pomona-Pitzer and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps when entering the SCIAC Championship tournament last weekend hosted by Claremont-McKenna College at Axelrood pool.

Claremont defeated La Verne Saturday in another close game winning by one goal, 9-8.

Freshman Seth Shelton, Broer and Carvitto led the team with two goals a piece, and Barrett and McPartland scored one goal each.

Freshman goalie Steve Straiger had three awesome blocks, but Claremont snuck one goal too many in to win the right for third place.

“We were close with Claremont and a little disappointed but we did what we could do to get back,” assistant coach Alex La said. “But we did really well.”

Later that day the men went up against Cal Tech and dominated them, 15-9.

Barrett and freshman Duncan Cox led the team with three goals each.

The Cal Tech match was a challenge but ULV took charge and almost everyone that was in the water scored.

Sophomore Ricardo Negron and Shelton scored two goals each and sophomore Taylor Harry, sophomore Justin Haas, Broer, Hernandez, McPartland and Carvitto all scored one goal each.

At the end of every season, SCIAC rates all of the team members that compete against each other and places them in a “Top 10” and “Top 20” rating.

This year three La Verne men were acknowledged for their excellent work.

Broer was recognized as the second top “First Round Scoring Leaders” with 17 goals. Negron was also recognized in the same category with nine goals. Freshman goalie Steve Straiger was recognized as the fourth top “First Round Save Leaders” with 51 saves.

Some of the players will go on to club polo and work hard to represent the University and others will rest and continue to practice and prepare for next season.
