The women’s tennis team beat the Caltech Beavers, 8-1, Saturday at Bonita High School.
The team was able to win the first match of the day which provided momentum after losing consecutive matches against other opponents.
“The team’s getting better, we’re really progressing,” sophomore Rebecca Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez was consistent throughout the day winning both the No. 2 doubles match, with her partner Nicole Harder, and the No. 2 singles match.
The Leopards dominated most of the day, winning a majority of the matches and excelling in the doubles matches.
In the best two out of three singles matches, La Verne took two wins while Caltech earned only one point.
“The game went well, it was a fun match. We are usually pretty even with Caltech so we expect it to be a good match,” head coach Brian Harrison said.
The tennis team has a small number of players on its roster but are still competitive in most of its matches and continue to progress in their training.
The win was a welcome change from the usual 9-0 losses that have been occurring this season and proves that team can pull through even when they have tough competitors.
The women continued play Monday at the Claremont Club against non-conference opponent Albion but lost, 8-1.
With the victory against Caltech, the Leopards are now in fifth place with a point total of seven in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
The Leopards resumes play at 7 p.m. on March 13 against non-conference opponent Sewanee.
Conference play continues at 2 p.m. on April 3 when La Verne travels to Pomona-Pitzer.
